The Scholarship Fund of Concord and Carlisle holds annual named fund brunch

A crowd of benefactors, trustees, and scholarship recipients attended the annual brunch hosted by The Scholarship Fund of Concord and Carlisle on Sunday, January 5, at the Trinity Episcopal Church. The brunch provides recipients of the 67 named funds held by The Scholarship Fund with the opportunity to meet Named Fund benefactors and honorees who have helped make possible their goal of higher education. 

A highlight of the afternoon was remarks by Gabe Zeinoun (CCHS 2019), the recipient of the Adrian A. Martinez Scholarship established to honor the life of Adrian Martinez (CCHS 2002). While at CCHS, Gabe was an honors student, a state level pole vaulter and sprinter for the track & field team as well as a popular WIQH disc jockey. Gabe paid tribute to the Martinez family’s generosity by emphasizing that it is enabling him to pursue studies in Computer Science and Biology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and, ultimately, move forward with his long-term goal to attend medical school and train as a cardiac surgeon.

Dr. Murray Miller then provided a heartfelt overview of the Dr. Barbara Schips Miller Scholarship established in 2007 by Murray and his children to honor Barbara’s years of dedicated service to the students and families of the Concord/Concord-Carlisle School Systems. The daughter of Holocaust survivors, Barbara immigrated to Canada and received degrees in psychology from McGill University. Upon graduation, Dr. Miller served as the psychologist for the Concord Public Schools for her entire career and received many honors in her chosen profession. In attendance at the brunch was the recipient of Dr. Miller’s scholarship, Marin Gertsmyer (CCHS 2019) who is exploring her interests in psychology, childhood education, and marketing at the University of Delaware.

Board Chair Rebecca “Bee” Loprete commented “The Scholarship Fund Brunch is a wonderful way to honor both our Named Fund donors and the students who benefit from their generosity. We're so proud of our scholars, and we love making the connection between these two groups.”  Bee also noted that over the past year, the Fund awarded approximately $275,000 to students, and is actively working to meet the needs of even more students in 2020.
