The james penhune
MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

James Penhune graduated from CCHS in 1979, where he participated in activities such as theater and played the lead in the school’s production of My Fair Lady. His passion for the arts and letters was nurtured by a remarkable teacher, Elliot Lillien, who inspired countless students with his humor, dedication, and enthusiasm for education.

After high school, James pursued his studies at New York University (NYU), immersing himself in the vibrant counterculture of New York City. His time in the city was marked by exploration and creativity, as he played in several bands, blending his love for music with his academic pursuits.

Transitioning from music to publishing, James built a successful career that allowed him to indulge his insatiable curiosity about literature and culture. His work in publishing not only honed his skills as a writer and editor but also deepened his appreciation for the written word.

A lifelong reader, James had a profound love for music and music history, often delving into the stories behind the songs and artists he admired. His curiosity extended far beyond music; he enjoyed exploring various cultural phenomena and was an avid football fan.

Motivated by his own experiences and the impact of educators like Elliot Lillien, this scholarship fund was established to help students with similar interests in the arts, literature, and culture.

James’s legacy embodies inspiration, creativity, and a lifelong commitment to learning. Through this scholarship, his friends and family hope to positively impact the lives of students who share his passions.
